PHL, BWI or Salisbury? Choosing the Best Airport for Your Delaware Beach Trip

Planning a trip to the Delaware beaches, or bringing family and guests in from out of town? The first decision is which airport to fly into. No major airport sits right at the beach, but several are within a comfortable drive of Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach, Lewes and Bethany Beach. The right choice depends on where you are staying, your flight options, and how much summer traffic you are willing to sit through.

Our team has been driving these routes since 1970, so here is an honest local comparison.

Nautilus and Transit 2

Philadelphia International Airport (PHL)

PHL is the region’s largest hub, with the widest choice of nonstop domestic and international routes. From the airport, the drive to Rehoboth Beach runs roughly two to two and a half hours, mostly straight down Route 1 through Delaware. Lewes and Milton are a few minutes closer, Bethany Beach a few minutes farther.

Best for: international arrivals, travelers who want the most flight choices, and anyone connecting through a major hub.

Watch out for: summer Friday and Sunday backups on Route 1 near the beach towns. Build in a cushion if you have a tight schedule.

Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI)

BWI is a similar drive, about two to two and a half hours to Rehoboth Beach, coming across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and down Route 404. It is a major base for low-cost carriers, so it often wins on fare price.

Best for: budget fares and travelers coming from the south or west.

Watch out for: Bay Bridge traffic. On summer weekends the bridge and Route 50 can add an hour or more. An experienced driver who knows the alternate routes earns their keep on this run.

Salisbury Regional Airport (SBY)

Salisbury, just over the Maryland line, is the closest commercial airport to the Delaware beaches. Bethany Beach is around 45 minutes away, and Rehoboth Beach about an hour. The tradeoff is limited service: a small number of daily regional flights, so you will usually connect through a larger hub and fares can run higher.

Best for: the shortest drive to the beach and avoiding metro traffic entirely.

Wilmington: Amtrak and ILG

Coming from New York, Philadelphia, Washington or anywhere on the Northeast Corridor? Skip the airport entirely and take the train. Amtrak stops at Wilmington Station, and from there it is about an hour and 45 minutes south to Rehoboth Beach. We meet arriving trains the same way we meet arriving flights. Wilmington also has a small airport (ILG) with limited commercial service that changes seasonally.

Delaware Coastal Airport (GED)

Flying private or charter? Delaware Coastal Airport in Georgetown is just 20 to 30 minutes from Rehoboth, Lewes, Millsboro and the resort towns. We provide black car pickups here year round.

What about the DC and New York airports?

We regularly run transfers from Washington National (DCA), Dulles (IAD), JFK and Newark (EWR) as well. Expect two and a half to three and a half hours from the DC airports and three and a half hours or more from the New York airports. These make sense for international itineraries that PHL cannot cover, or when the fare difference is large enough to justify the drive.

Tips for a smooth airport transfer to the beach

  • Book early in summer. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, cars and drivers fill up fast, especially on weekends.
  • Give us your flight number. We track arrivals, so a delayed flight means an adjusted pickup, not a missed one.
  • Traveling as a group? One vehicle beats a caravan of rideshares. Our buses and trolleys handle family reunions, wedding parties and corporate groups arriving on different flights.
  • Leave a buffer on the return trip. Summer traffic at the Bay Bridge and on Route 1 is the number one cause of missed flights from the beach.
