Day Trips from Southern Delaware: DC, Philadelphia, NYC and Closer to Home

One of the best things about living in or visiting the Delaware beaches is how much sits within a day’s reach. Washington, Philadelphia and even New York City are all close enough for a day trip from southern Delaware, and some of the best outings never leave Sussex County at all. Here are the trips our drivers get asked about most, with honest notes on timing so you can plan a day that feels easy instead of rushed.

Washington, DC

Around two and a half to three hours from Rehoboth Beach, Washington makes a full but comfortable day. The Smithsonian museums are free, the monuments are walkable, and spring cherry blossom season is worth planning a trip around. December brings the holiday displays. The biggest headache of a DC day trip is parking, which is exactly why groups charter: everyone rides together, gets dropped at the door, and nobody circles the block.

Philadelphia and Longwood Gardens

Philadelphia is roughly two to two and a half hours north: Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, world-class museums and a lunch stop at Reading Terminal Market make an easy itinerary. Just outside the city, Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square is one of the most popular Pennsylvania day trips we run, especially for garden clubs and senior groups. The conservatory and fountain shows are spectacular in summer, and A Longwood Christmas is a beloved holiday tradition. Art lovers can push a little farther to Grounds for Sculpture in New Jersey.

New York City

Yes, New York works as a day trip from southern Delaware. It is a long one, about three and a half to four hours each way, so we recommend an early start, a Broadway matinee or a holiday itinerary around the Rockefeller Center tree and the window displays, and a relaxed ride home while someone else handles the traffic. For groups, the door-to-door math beats the train from Wilmington once you count connections and cabs.

Closer to home: breweries, wineries and history

Some of our favorite tours stay right here in Sussex County. Milton is home to Dogfish Head’s brewery, Lewes has Nassau Valley Vineyards, Delaware’s first winery, and a growing list of craft breweries stretches through Rehoboth Beach, Lewes and Dewey Beach. String three or four stops together and you have a brewery or winery tour where nobody has to volunteer as designated driver.

Prefer history to hops? Lewes proudly calls itself the first town in the first state, Cape Henlopen State Park pairs a lighthouse view with WWII observation towers, and the Rehoboth Beach boardwalk has been an institution for over a century. We have been giving tours of these towns since 1970, and our drivers still enjoy showing them off.

• Annapolis, MD: about two hours, sailboats, the Naval Academy and a walkable historic harbor.
• Brandywine Valley: Winterthur and the du Pont estates pair well with a Longwood Gardens day.

• Start early for the far destinations. DC and NYC days are best with a morning departure and an evening return.
• Book ahead for peak dates. Cherry blossom season, A Longwood Christmas and December in New York fill our calendar quickly.
• One vehicle changes the whole day. No caravans, no parking, no one lost on Route 50. Choose a black car, a mini bus or one of our classic trolleys from our fleet based on your group size.
